10:01 pm - Ain't life grand?
Well "grand" is a bit strong, but I can't complain too much at the moment.
Back in Liverpool to finish off and hand in my final assignments after a fairly uneventful Easter break. The highlight was my usual trip down south to see people. Got to see my niece who I hadn't seen for months. Tweenies Jigsaw puzzles and a truly amazing remote controlled duck were the entertainment. Ramps were built, the duck was put to good use. It works on land AND in water. Seriously, best toy ever. She recently turned two and is constantly trying to talk, I really wish my brother didn't live so far away so I could visit more often, she's amazing. I'm such a girl. *paints Corsa pink*.
My cousin came up to visit and it struck me for the first time that we have a lot of cool stuff in our house in Blackburn. As I haven't spent all that much time there during uni term time and try to go visiting people in the holidays I haven't had many people round who are my age. He was really impressed with it anyway, he kept saying "wow", I don't think any house I've lived in before would get that kind of response. The main thing is the ridiculous 42 inch LCD TV in the living room and the rather flashy extension complete with 32 inch flat screen, pool table and tropical fish.
I love the pool table (even though I'm still awful at it) but in truth it wasn't actually expensive at all and isn't that extravagant, 300 quid on ebay, no more expensive than a new games console etc. We are very lucky to (just) have the room for it though. Same with the TVs actually, we bought them just before the HD craze when LCD TVs actually became affordable. Everything was bought at a sensible price as we're far from rich. We couldn't afford any of this stuff when it first came out and certainly couldn't get a brand new pool table, but at face value it must look excessive. I suppose the fact that our house is bigger than and we have a few luxuries higlights the real difference in living costs between the North West and South East.
As for the fish, we haven't had any random unexplained deaths for a while, so hurrah. The catfish are massive now, being two of about only 5 or 6 fish that have survived from the first couple of batches we bought, their crazy wiggling swimming style evidently makes them better than all other fish. Oh, we got a new Siamese fighting fish too. Much much redder than our old bluey/purply one, it looks kewl.
Like this: http://www.geocities.com/madhunag2002/f
We've changed cars for about the millionth time too. My mum has gone through so many cars recently its hard to keep track. She bought various sporty cars for fun (Nissan 200SX, Pontiac Trans Am), then each one proved too impractical to run and she had to settle for something sensible for a while (a Rover of some description). Then she got bored and bought a Nissan Skyline. This of course proved incredibly expensive to run so she's just changed again and bought a compromise semi-sporty MG thing. My stepdad has been rattling through the cars too, he recently traded in his old car and got a Subaru Impreza hatch back. Too old to drive a car with gold wheel trims? Yup. I'm just glad they don't have matching black Rover 600s any more. Most depressing funeral-esque driveway you can imagine.
Being back in Liverpool means glorious 8mb Bulldog broadband access. Yes yes, the TV downloadery takes next to no time. I am up to date again with all my shows. I sometimes wish I was a middle aged African American lady from the deep south so I could call them "my stories", but not often.
OC is building up in time for the finale. Sandy is a bad, bad man. Summer is infinitely hotter than Marissa and has been consistently so for three seasons. You know this to be true. Ryan needs to end up with Teresa but I don't think he will, he much prefers stick-thin Barton and her many, many issues. Bah. Lost is on a break yet again, no new one til May 3rd.
Scrubs is getting very emotional at the moment, the way this fifth series is going suggests that it could be the last one, I hope that's not the case. Naruto is turd, stop with the god damn filler episodes, they are tiresome. Family Guy and American Dad are teh funny. Oh, and South Park is utter madness as ever. The Cartoon Wars episodes were hilarious, I hated the Towelie one, Manbearpig was a return to form. Everyone should download South Park, you can download it in crappy quality and it doesn't matter because of the shoddy animation. Give it a chance again if you dismissed it in the early days, they're all about the satire and mockery of fads/celebrities/media scares these days.
http://www.pimpmysnack.com Holy crap look at that massive Jammie Dodger. Awesome.
I should be doing the aforementioned assignments so it's time for me to hit the old.. dusty trail.
In closing, Tom Cruise is a fruitcake. I'm super, super serial.

07:20 pm - Goodbye Chaz.
Today has been emotionally exhausting. At 12pm we went to a Catholic Church to say goodbye to one of my best friends, gone at age 17.
The turn out for the funeral was incredible, had to be close to 200 people, and the massive outpouring of support must have been helping his parents who seemed to be coping amazingly well.
The service brought out mixed emotions in me. The claims that Charlie kept the teachings of Jesus close to his heart were infuriating because they just weren't true and it gave a sense of a generic church service with my friend's name inserted. That said, his parents and family are Catholics and I can fully appreciate that these elements of the service provided them with a lot of comfort and were therefore important.
The eulogy from Charlie's dad, the speech from one of the clergyman about the need for young people to share their problems and the closing rendition of "You'll never walk alone" as his coffin was carried out were much more personalised and the latter part in particular was incredibly moving.
Thankfully it didn't rain as we all stood out side and laid flowers for him and generally the day helped myself and a lot of others to begin to come to terms with the the tragic and shocking events of last Sunday. We went to the wake afterwards and stayed for a few hours, I caught up with people I haven't seen for years and spoke to Charlie's parents and brother. I noticed that a lot of people had Liverpool shirts with tributes to Charlie on the back which only further made my mind up that I'd do the same thing when I get my next shirt. I signed the book provided by his parents with a simple goodbye message as I left and made sure his brother has my new phone number. I hope he calls me if he needs to talk but it seems that he'll only talk to his girlfriend at the moment.
Personally I'm shattered. I don't think I can cry any more today and I'm just sitting around not knowing quite what to do with myself. A sad and difficult day but a fine send off for someone who died far too young.
RIP Charlie McConn,
1988-2006.

08:34 pm - RIP Charlie
I got some horrible, horrible news today.
One of my best friends from when I was growing up killed himself last Sunday. He'd had an argument with his girlfriend over something, come home in a bad mood but no worse than usual and then gone to bed. At some point during the night he left the house and ultimately threw himself in front of a train.
I am actually numb. I've never really experienced what people describe as emotional numbness when they're faced with bad news but when I was told this I was totally gone. I still don't know what to think. The funeral is on Saturday and I can only hope I start to come to terms with it there. I can't imagine how his family feels. Seventeen years old, what a waste.
I've been going through all the pointless what-ifs tonight. Feeling guilty for not keeping in touch with him as well as I could have, feeling guilty for not crying about it. Its really not important though, his little sister, his brother and his parents will be going through hell and I just hope that the big turn out expected for his funeral will help them cope as they have to something no parent should have to.
All I know for certain is that I'll be at his funeral and that when I get the new Liverpool shirt it will have "Ace" on the back as a tribute to one of my best friends who also happened to have the best middle name I've ever heard.
Rest in Peace Charlie Ace McConn.

07:31 am - Hey man you know I'm really OK...
...the gun in my hand will tell you the same.
New Prince single, infectious no? No? Just me? Bah. Also the music from that Toyota Yaris "Bigsmall" advert, "Bring it" by Mando Ranks. Bouncy.
In other ad music news, I'm glad to hear that I have a friend in the AA, very comforting.
Been listening to "Smash" by The Offspring again. I never get tired of that album, nothing but the hits, nothing but the hits, nothing but the muthafuggin hits.
If you haven't seen "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" you really should, it is excellent. Val Kilmer's performance has finally made me forgive him for Batman Forever and I never thought that would happen. Robert Downey Jr and Michelle Monaghan are superb too, as is the script with all the witty dialogue. Everyone also needs to watch Ong Bak, though I suspect that everyone has by now. Kung Fu Hustle also. I may or may not have been checking out the HMV World cinema sale recently. Good deals though; Old Boy, Kung fu hustle, Ong Bak, Battle Royale, Amelie, Delicatessen and numerous others are all well worth the six to eight quid.
New OC was better than last week's, haven't watched Lost yet but I hear good things. Naruto.. well I sort of watched it. I'm getting so tired of the filler that I actually skim-watched it to see if anything worthwhile happened, I may watch it properly if I get bored. To add to my ridiculously time consuming TV watchery I've finally caught up with Scrubs and am now watching Season 5 on a weekly basis, I still love it. I'd really like to add "Turkleton" as my extra middle name.
Liverpool keep on winning, so do Man United, bleh. Portsmouth look like they might stay up though, so hooray for that. Spurs, stop losing you fools.
I realise that I should probably change the look of this thing. I must have the least interesting looking livejournal in existence. Also the least interesting to read, he adds with endearing self-deprecation.
Easter break has started, hopefully going home over the next few days and I should be heading down South to visit my brother and cousins in Watford and Hemel Hempstead which is always good. I didn't get a chance to go at Christmas so I'm looking forward to it.
Anyway, I'm off to work up a black sweat, I presume it requires the consumption of many black foodstuffs (like Black Jacks) that will eventually cause you to secrete black food colouring. This may be a problem as I prefer Fruit Salads.

06:21 pm - I don't ask for much these days...
.. But a few more 5-1 thrashings wouldn't go amiss eh lads?
"Blah" isn't really my mood but I couldn't find "Meh". There's a world of difference.
Still getting at least one (often three) calls from marketing people every single day. The last guy got quite angry and defensive when I asked if he was calling on behalf of T-Mobile. "WHAT DOES IT MATTER IF I AM??? I'M JUST DOING MY JOB!" I almost apologised to him but decided that hanging up would do. They really do need to stop calling though.
Channel 4 continue to churn out the hits in terms of bizarre documentaries, this week it was Fat Pets. Stupid, stupid woman feeding her obese rottweiler to the point that one of its hind legs had given out and breathing was a struggle. "I'm not hurtin' 'er, she can 'ave what she wants, she's well looked after." Dear oh dear. On a lighter note, the fat fat cat was hilarious with its pig-like underhang. Also, the ending was all heartwarming as they got it to gradulally lose weight by encouraging it to exercise. Hooray for doting owners who are willing to be told when they're killing their pet with love. A specific hooray, but a worthy one.
I got more Gnarls Barkley songs, they are almost as good as Crazy. I cannot wait for this album. I hope Zane Lowe's incessant pimping makes it a rousing success, Cee-Lo needs mainstream success for his crooning ability. As for Dangermouse, the man is clearly some kind of genius. A Beatles mash-up album, Gorillaz productions, resurrecting Gemini, doing a collabo with MF Doom about Aqua teen hunger force and now this.
Did some Emily Dickinson poems on Tuesday. I usually hate reading poetry as part of an English course and would ideally do a course that was 100% based on novels but I actually liked some of this stuff. I enjoy reading books, I do it for fun, but with poetry my experience has been almost exclusively "read this and write so many thousand words", which puts you off a little. But yeah, this was good stuff,
And then a Plank in Reason, broke,
And I dropped down, and down -
And hit a World, at every plunge,
And Finished knowing - then-
There you have it, Emily Dickinson in my Livejournal. Madness isn't it. I swear I haven't become a rambling pseudo-depressed teenager. I do enjoy the music of Killswitch Engage though.
Fort Minor, what happened? Great lead single, good album, then what? Why isn't Mike Shinoda all over Radio 1? Bah.
I got the new OC. It was quite good, there's another one out too, back to back episodes eh? Luxury. I don't want to spoilerise, especially as E4 isn't that far behind now, but I have to say Sandy's actions were so disappointing that it might actually be the saddest thing they've done on that show since Jimmy Cooper nearly got beaten to death. Oh, and Nikki Reed being in it semi-regularly now only makes it more watchable.
It all seems very sedate compared to the compelling beast that is Lost though. I need new Lost and I need it now.
I got The Rumble Fish for PS2. It's quite good, there's a character named Orville. I'd recommend it but it's hard to get and is very expensive as something to try if you have no idea what it is.
Got to stop typing now.
The End.

03:47 pm - Catch 22
Guy on local news commenting on a controversial piece of legislation,
"It's a catch 22 situation, if he does it and people are happy, great, if he does it and people don't like it there's a problem."
Why is it that people always pick their five minutes of fame to try using an expression for the first time?
11:36 am - Snowed in~!
Yes yes, stuck in Blackburn due to blizzard-like conditions. Spectacular stuff that my camera phone is sadly not capturing as well as I'd like. Can't get back to the uni house to watch Liverpool/Arsenal, bugger.
I am gradually getting hooked on Hollyoaks. Becca you dirty cheating hussy with the unusual but strangely attractive nose. I think my soap treachery is being caused by the excess of moaning pensioners in Eastenders these days. I'm not sure about the characters talking to themselves out loud or the Scrubs-esque cut aways that don't looke quite right in a soap but for now Hollyoaks is certainly more watchable than the Sonia/Naomi story. *Shudders*.
New Lenor "In the pink". *Sniggers in the style of Beavis and Butthead.*
I'm really really bored. The laptop I use when I'm at home has a faulty soundcard, so no music. Most of my stuff is at uni, so no other entertainment. Snowed inside the house, so no..erm..being outside the house. Yeah, bored.

01:15 pm - U...Zu..Ma...Ki... Naruto Fillerendan!
Small addition, this week's Naruto was the most fillery bunch of filler than ever filled time. Naruto looking after an annoying child who had inhuman amounts of snot clinging to his face whilst delivering a corny message about money not being the be all and end all in life. I generally enjoy the comedy filler episodes too, the one with the attempts to see Kakashi's face was funny stuff, this one fell really flat. It was easily worse than the one about the ramen making contest against the chef ninjas, and that was pretty poor.
I'm sure it'll pick up again soon though, and even if it doesn't the fact that I've invested my time in 174 episodes means I'll keep plugging away.
12:40 pm - Down but not out, or in this case out but not down.
Argh, I just typed a long entry and somehow lost the whole thing despite that autosave thing. Crap.
When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high.
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song
Of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
Well what else would the current music be?
Liverpool went crashing out of the Champions league then. I knew that as soon as Sami Hyypia hadn't passed his fitness test we'd be in danger of conceding, and that if we conceded we were as good as out. I know they've managed some great comebacks before (I was there live for the Olympiakos one), but Benfica are a far better side than Olympiakos and we knew how to score goals back then. Some of the defensive errors leading to Simao's goal were pretty farcical for a team that prides itself on defence, though the strike itself was stunning. I can only hope that Barcelona go on to win the tournament, as aside from Liverpool there isn't a team in the world I'd rather see win it and there are few players I'd like to see win it than Ronaldinho. As for the rest of the season, if we finish 2nd and win the FA Cup I'll be more than happy. Even if we don't, this season's league points tally beats last time with ease, so hooray for progress.
Boring football ramblings aside, it has been a very uneventful few days. AUT strike action on Tuesday meant no lectures so I've hardly been to Uni at all. I'm going home later to visit my shiny new car. Mobile phone pictures sent to me confirm that it looks much like a red Vauxhall Corsa.
We went to a fancy Italian restaurant this week for my housemate's birthday. The place was called "Est Est Est" which isn't the best name, but the profiteroles could have been served at "Papa Luigi's house of steaming excrement" and still been worth the trip. We all had a conversation about the things we had stolen in our lifetimes and it turns out that I was by far the most innocent. We all decided that downloading didn't count because we couldn't begin to catalogue all of our various copyright theft offences. God bless the Internet eh?
My laziness regarding rent payments has finally come back to haunt me. For whatever reason, we never go and pay rent until we have received at least one letter of warning from the landlord. I think this is partly because the landlord's office is in the opposite direction to University and the town centre and partly because we all dislike the guy. Either way, he got a bit serious this time and sent a letter stating his intent to take the matter to court. The problem was he also sent it home, which led to me being interrogated by my panicking mother who couldn't understand that I simply hadn't been bothered to go and pay ("I'd rather you just tell me if you don't have the money for whatever reason"). I had to assure her that I had every penny and was left wondering why she thought so little of me. I may buy things I don't need but I'm not going to blow an 800 quid student loan payment on DVDs and get evicted.
Oh, if the landlord ir henceforth referred to as "DK" or "Dirty Keith" it's simply because his name is Keith and he is visibly dirty. I can't understand how someone who is reasonably well off in this country in this day and age can actually live with a visible layer of grime on them. Nasty. I've paid now of course, but I'm none too happy about him sending that home without telling me and causing a panic, I'm 20 years old and he acted somewhat like a school teacher. I know I should have paid him but I reckon he's still a bit of an underhanded git.
Everyone needs to see the American Dad episode "Finances with wolves". Stan's attempts to park his own car and his Flava Flav clock are pure gold. No Lost, OC or Family Guy this week, damn the scheduling once again.
One of my housemates has really taken to the song "Daydream in blue" by I Monster. You know the one, "Daydream.. I fell asleep among the flowers, for a couple of hours, such a beautiful day". He plays it constantly and sings along, even to the crazy robot voice vocoder bit. If you've heard the song you can imagine how ridiculous it sounds but I certainly won't begrudge him for being that into his music, it's an oddly beautiful thing.
I got Firepro returns yesterday, it is tremendous. It has the Paradise Lock in it and Genki makes the crowd chant "H-A-G-E!". Best game ever. If you know what any of that means you'll agree, if not its best not to worry.
You know when I said future entries would be shorter? I am a liar.

11:17 pm - So, I should probably become a hairdresser....
I own a girls' car.
There, I said it.
My parents, in an act of extreme generosity even for them, have bought me a car as a very early 21st birthday present. I am of course very, very grateful to them for it. The car is a red(~!) Vauxhall Corsa, it looks all shiny and apparently they're easy to drive and relatively nippy. However, I was pretty sure on hearing the news that the Corsa is considered a girly car. Having canvassed opinion on the matter my suspicions have largely been confirmed. I changed my MSN name to "Be honest, is a Corsa a girls' car?"
Some responses:
"My sister drives a Corsa."
"Yes, yes it is."
"Yes, it most definitely is a girly car."
"Yes, it's also has a reputation as a bit of a gay car".
Thing is, I never expected to be bought a car, I'm pretty damn excited about owning one and I like to think I'm not shallow enough to let such stereotypical gubbins bother me, so hooray for my car. Do I become a hairdresser or get a big chavtastic body kit and have some pictures of naked glamour models airbrushed onto the outside? For now I think I'm balanced enough to do neither and just be happy that I have a car. Now I'm off to down pints, start a fight and 'ave it laaarge, or something.
07:13 am - Boring, boring Charlton
Note, this was actually typed up yesterday evening but for whatever reason my internet access went down for the night. So, writings from the past. Spooky.
Back again, for the very first time,
Don't worry if I write cheques,
I write rhymes.
I've decided to do something gimmicky, opening each entry with something relating to my "Current music" thing at the end.
So I just watched Liverpool vs Charlton on premplus and I feel like gouging my eyes out. 22 attempts on goal! 22! Mhyre got man of the match, Fowler had a goal unfairly disallowed and we needlessly drop points. What's more worrying is that Benfica will come to Anfield with the same gameplan as Charlton and a 0-0 there will be far far worse than this one. Boring, boring Charlton.
In other news, the sore throat appears to have gone. It got so bad yesterday I was actually mumbling Joe Pesci-esque expletives to myself every time I swallowed. But yes, now it has released me. I have coursework that needs to be in by Tuesday by the latest and even though I don't feel ill now I'm struggling to find the motivation. I'm sure I'll get it done when I'm almost out of time though, I usually do.
Watched episode 15 of Lost series 2 yesterday, OH MY GOD etc etc. Yeah, brilliant stuff, answers provided, many more questions raised and Mr Eko being all kinds of great again. Listening to bits and pieces form the new Dilated Peoples album, it's as good as expected. Saturday is filthy, filthy junkfood night in this househould so I'm currently scouring menus to find the greasiest item available. Chips with cheese, what a glorious invention. How do we make deep fried potato less healthy? Cover it in melted fat! Inspired. They need to batter them and maybe chocolate dip them to make them instantly fatal.
Other than that, nothing to report. Oh yes, this journal will be mundane, but I'm getting some kind of therapeutic enjoyment from typing this everyday stuff so for now I'm still of the opinion that starting it was the right move.

01:36 am - I had to do one of these eventually...
So, after being a regular internet user for a good few years now I've finally decided to start one of these blog things. I figure an actual physical diary would be abandoned whereas this can just be another distraction when I'm meant to be doing coursework.
Why start it tonight?
Well, I planned to start it some time this week as the past few weeks have actually been relatively interesting (for me that is, not for the casual observer who will no doubt be blown away by the sheer banality of it all).
Anyway, purely to indulge my, erm, early March resolution that is keeping track of things that I do in some kind of archived form, I will type it all up in this here blog.
Last Sunday I was lucky enough to meet Liverpool FC's Momo Sissoko at a swanky club down on the Albert docks, an unexpected bonus after having a surprisingly good time at a stranger's birthday party. One of my housemates is hugely into some girl off his Uni course, she invited him, he needed back up. So I went as did my other two housemates, all adhering to the "smart black and white" theme and looking pretty sharp by our usually scruffy standards.
There was free wine (the only wine I'll drink) and I was fortunate enough to run into someone I know from one of last term's English modules who I was rather pleased to see and thus enjoyed the whole thing more than expected. The downside was that the venue closed at 1AM, something I'd be quite annoyed about if I'd paid to hire the place as I'm sure it was seriously expensive. However, we countered this by moving on to a club. Another girl off my course who I've never actually spoken to came up to us on the way in, said she'd noticed my Liverpool shirt with Sissoko on the back earlier in the term and asked if I'd like to meet him. Things like this don't happen to me very often, so I was more than a bit chuffed. So yeah, we all got to meet Momo and Djimi Traore, unfortunately we weren't allowed to take any pictures (I suspect Momo isn't meant to be out clubbing given his nasty eye injury) but it'll still be a nice Liverpool memory for me when I have to leave the city in the summer.
In the few weeks before that I've been part of the celebrations for three birthdays. One of my housemates, a friend from school and my Nan. For one we had a nice lunch at a restaurant followed by a trip home to watch the "Wallace and Gromit in the curse of the were rabbit", for another I went to Brighton then on to Canterbury for a really fun night of clubbing and for the other we took the seedy route, going to a strip club and paying for many a birthday dance. I will leave it to the reader to guess which applies to which. Oh, and the weekend before *that* I went to a stand up comedy show at Baby Blue in Liverpool which was hilarious in parts but seriously expensive.
As much fun as all this has been I have spent ridiculous amounts of money that I really don't have. I haven't paid my rent for January-March yet and I want to get to at least one or two more Liverpool games before the season ends but I'm not sure how I'm going to manage it. My attendance for one of my Uni modules has suffered as well, I'm determined to avoid missing any more lectures or seminars from now until graduation, we'll see how that goes.
Phew, this is a ludicrously long first entry. The others will be shorter methinks. But while I'm in the typing mood, 2006 has had a pretty blinding start in terms of music, TV and other entertainment goodness. "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley (the new project from Cee-lo and DJ Dangermouse) is one of my favourite songs in ages, I can't stop listening to it. Fantastic stuff, everyone should buy the album in the summer. Listen to Zane Lowe, he'll tell you how much you need to buy it. He'll also keep flogging the awful "are you on board?" gimmick but nobody's perfect.
Aside from that, "No Tomorrow" by Orson is a song that The Darkness should have made but didn't and won't because they're crap. Two songs that I really like and am not sick of yet on regular radio rotation, that has to be some kind of record.
Then of course there's Lost, which becomes more and more essential with each new episode. I'm one of the many people who has to download the latest episode from America as soon as it airs and the massive breaks in between episodes get harder and harder to take. I won't spoil anything here, but if you don't watch Lost you really really should. Family Guy and American Dad are still going, the latter steadily improving as it goes on. It still doesn't match up to Family Guy but I hope it keeps running. Oh, and I'm still watching The OC, again downloading as they come out and again getting frustrated with the stupid American scheduling. What's wrong with weekly TV shows that air, y'know, every week?
Liverpool are going strong. Goal scoring remains a problem but the progress made in the league since last season is fantastic, the Champions league tie with Benfica is far from over and we knocked the scum out of the FA Cup. Happy times indeed, and even if you're not happy with it just be thankful you don't support Arsenal.
Soo, aside from the sore throat that's making me feel like I've downed a pint of acid I'm reasonably mellow at the moment. Still playing too much Pro Evo, trying to overcome my general apathy and laziness and listening to lots of music.
My final thought will be this: Even if you hate or haven't seen Garden State you should listen to The Shins. If you don't like The Shins then listen to whatever you're currently into or even better download something you've never heard before. Failing that listen to the Gnarls Barkley song. If you don't like that then kindly remove your ears and send me your MP3 player.
